Thursdays in Black – calling for an end to gender-based violence

December 5, 2019

Staff at the ABM office, pictured below, dressed in black today to show solidarity with the Thursdays in Black Campaign. By wearing black on Thursdays, we are standing up against gender-based violence and working towards a world without rape and violence.

The Thursdays in Black movement grew out of the World Council of Churches (WCC) Decade of Churches in Solidarity with Women (1988-1998), in which the stories of rape as a weapon of war, gender injustice, abuse, violence, and many tragedies that grow outward from such violence became all the more visible.

16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence

ABM also supports the international campaign 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence which challenges violence against women and girls. This is an annual campaign which runs from 25 November (the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) to 10 December (Human Rights Day).

More than 6000 organizations in approximately 187 countries have participated in the 16 Days Campaign since 1991, to call for the elimination of all forms of gender-based violence against women.

ABM’s Gender and Governance project in Zambia

ABM supports the Gender and Governance project in Zambia, which is run by our church partner, the Zambian Anglican Council Outreach Program (ZACOP). This project is currently at work in four large villages in the eastern part of the country and aims to address issues of gender-based violence including to end child marriage, educate people about the rights of women and children, and to assist victims of violence.
