ABM’s monitoring trip to Nepal

Dr Julianne Stewart, ABM’s Programs Director, shared the following images and a report with us from her trip to Nepal last week. ABM was able to contribute over $188,000 in response to the devastating earthquakes last year, thanks to the generosity of our donors.

“The monitoring trip ended Sunday and I’m now en route to Kenya. I was part of an ACT Alliance Joint Monitoring Visit looking at the earthquake response, especially by Lutheran World Federation to whom ABM has sent the funds our supporters gave us.

“Apart from emergency food and shelter, they have been assisting earthquake-affected communities in the hilly rural and remote areas with re-establishing water sources that disappeared during the earthquake, working with local NGOs to implement psycho-social counselling and other support for trauma victims, and are helping vulnerable people (Dalits, disabled, single parents etc) with small livelihood grants and training to help them get back on their feet.

“Currently a lot of effort is going into building insulated and earthquake-resistant temporary shelters which will last at least 5 years, since it will take at least that long before people can properly rebuild their houses.

“All of the people we met in the villages we went to expressed both gratitude for the assistance, and also hope that they would soon be able to properly rebuild their homes and get their farm productivity back to normal.”
