Update: Church Capacity Building

ABM supports the Anglican Church of Melanesia (ACOM) as it continues to grow and expand its Community Development programs. This year, several key workshops and training sessions were conducted as a result, guided by the churches’ newly developed Strategic Plan.

The first of these included a Strategy Workshop, facilitated by the World Vision Strategy consultant to the Pacific. Following on from the Strategic Planning process and the ACOM Partner Roundtable in 2014, this workshop was organized in order to assess the goals of the church, identify Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and develop an implementation plan with responsible staff, budgetary needs, and a timeline for completion.

The various dioceses are now in the process of adding further detail to this implementation plan, and once submitted to the ACOM Provincial Headquarters, will guide work in both Community Development and Church activities, focusing energy and resources for maximum effectiveness.

Several key staff in the ACOM Development office (known as the Melanesia Board of Mission, or MBM) have also been supported through this Institutional Strengthening program. This includes funding for salaries, as well as opportunities for peer learning overseas. Strengthening Disaster Risk Reduction procedures has been a major focus of both these investments, however there has also been training in Asset-based Community Development (ABCD) and the effective monitoring, evaluating and reporting of projects.

Recently the entire financial staff from both ACOM Solomon Islands and Vanuatu received training in financial management systems, funded by ABM. This training was delivered by South Pacific Software Services, and included expert guidance on the use of the Attache accounting system to support work in acquittal reporting on Community Development projects.

By supporting these vital workshops and training sessions, you can help the Anglican Church of Melanesia strengthen its systems, management and people to deliver increasingly more effective Community Development programs throughout the Solomon Islands.
