Anglican Church’s General Synod in Adelaide

June 11, 2014

The Anglican Church of Australia’s 16th General Synod will be held in Adelaide this year with an election for a new primate.

General Synod’s media department advised of the following:

The Anglican Church is expected to endorse mandatory reporting of child abuse, including by ministers of religion, among proposals for protecting children when it holds its 16th General Synod in Adelaide from June 30 to July 4.

The synod, the three-yearly parliament of the national church, will also debate some strong resolutions on freedom of speech, freedom of religion and asylum seekers. Child protection and securing the church’s future are also on the agenda.

Bishops, clergy and lay people from the 23 Anglican dioceses plus the two Indigenous bishops attend the synod, which passes legislation for the individual dioceses to adopt.

Before the synod begins, there will be an election for a new primate, or national leader. Brisbane Archbishop Philip Aspinall’s term ends after the synod.

More information about the 2014 General Synod may be found on their website http://www.anglican.org.au/general-synods/2014/Pages/General-Synod-2014.aspx.
