Celebrate NAIDOC Week 8 – 15 July, 2018

July 9, 2018

NAIDOC Week celebrations are taking place across Australia during this week – 8 to 15 July.

NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced to the emergence of Aboriginal groups in the 1920′s which sought to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.

Each year has a different theme, with the 2018 theme ‘Because of Her, We Can!’ aimed at celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and the important roles they have played, and continue to do so, in communities at all levels.

More information on this theme can be found on the NAIDOC website:

As leaders, trailblazers, politicians, activists and social change advocates, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women fought and continue to fight, for justice, equal rights, our rights to country, for law and justice, access to education, employment and to maintain and celebrate our culture, language, music and art.”

“They are our mothers, our elders, our grandmothers, our aunties, our sisters and our daughters.”

There are many resources available to download from www.naidoc.org.au and ideas of how you can participate in supporting your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
