It is with much sadness that we share the news that the Reverend Joan Pascoe passed away on Tuesday 29 January, 2019. 

ABM was fortunate to have the opportunity to present Joan with the ABM Coaldrake Award on Wednesday 27 June, 2018, in recognition of her services to our mission. She was trained at ABM’s House of the Epiphany in Sydney (pictured at left) and served in Papua New Guinea as a missionary from 1964 to 1967.

The Most Reverend Dr Phillip Aspinall, Archbishop of Brisbane, issued an Ad Clerum giving thanks to Joan and her commitment and contribution to the Australian Anglican Church, and celebrating the significant milestones during her life. 

There will be a Requiem Eucharist for Joan on Thursday 7 February at St Andrew’s Caloundra at 3.00pm.

Dear sisters and brothers

Death of the Reverend Joan Pascoe

ln the sure and certain hope of the resurrection we give thanks for the life of the Reverend Joan Pascoe who died on Tuesday, 29th January 2019. Joan was admitted to the Sunshíne Coast University Hospital on Sunday 27 January with complications arisíng from diabetes, which she had suffered from in her later years.

Joan was born in 1939. Her early training was education, ín which she had a lifelong interest. Joan obtained a Certificate of Teaching in 1959. ln 1963 Joan trained at ABM’s House of the Epiphany in Sydney and from 1964-67 served as Principal and Supervisor of Teachers in various mission districts in PNG. She later obtained a Graduate Diploma in Special Education in 1977; Member of the Australian College of Educators 1978; and Bachelor of Education 1981.

Joan obtained her Bachelor of Theology (BCT) in 1991. She was ordained Deacon in November 1991 and served at St Oswald’s, Banyo (1991-92). ln December 1992 Joan was ordained Priest and served in the (Provisional) Parísh of Samford (1992-94; then Allora (1994); Biggenden (1995-99); and Nanango (1999-2004).

ln retirement Joan held a PTO in the Parish of Caloundra with Glasshouse Country (2004-16) and an Archbishop’s Certificate to Officiate on Special Occasíons from 2016. She was also a valued member of MU Caloundra. ln 2018 Joan was awarded a Coaldrake award for service to ABM.

Joan’s call to ordained min¡stry occurred at a tíme of great change in the lífe of the church. Joan was among the first women ordained priest in the Diocese of Brisbane. This took place at St John’s Cathedral on 20 December 1992 where Joan was ordained priest, along with five other women and seven men. This was indeed a historic moment in the life of the Diocese and in the wider church.

A Requiem Eucharist for Joan will take place on Thursday 7 February at St Andrew’s Caloundra at 3.00pm. Clergy are invited to attend and robe. The liturgical colour is white.

May Joan rest in peace and rise in glory.
