Adelaide’s Film Morning

Elaine Edwards, a member of ABM’s Adelaide Auxiliary, reports on a fundraising event which was held in May at the heritage-listed Capri Theatre in Goodwood, South Australia.

There was a happy buzz of conversation in the foyer of the Art Deco Capri Theatre, as people gathered for the ABM Auxiliary’s annual Film Morning. 

Morning tea was enjoyed, raffle tickets were purchased, Bring’n’Buy stalls did a brisk trade and friends were greeted before the patrons headed into the theatre to find their seats. There the lovely old Wurlitzer organ was being played, producing all the old time favourites for foot-tapping enjoyment. 

After the drawing of the raffle, with plenty of prizes to be won, the patrons settled down to watch the charming, old-fashioned caper movie Whisky Galore. The film is based on a true story during World War II, when the tiny Scottish island of Todday runs out of whisky. But when a freighter runs aground nearby, the islanders are delighted to learn it is carrying 50,000 cases of whisky. The officious English Army Captain Waggett demands the return of the liquor, but the islanders have other ideas. 

And there was a happy buzz of conversation in the foyer as patrons left the theatre – some lucky ones with raffle prizes; most with purchases of something pretty, or delectable, or useful from the Bring’n’Buy stalls; some ‘out-of-towners’ looking forward to their annual lunch together in the city; all smiling, having enjoyed a pleasurable morning, and having supported ABM-A while doing so. 

The proceeds of $1,784 were forwarded to the General Funds of ABM-A.
