Update on Gawura

St Andrew’s Cathedral School Secondary Scholarship Program

In 2014, 26 Aboriginal and Torres Strait students were enrolled at Gawura – a Kindergarten to Year 6 School based in Sydney’s CBD for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who live locally. 13 students were enrolled in the Secondary Scholarship program at St Andrew’s Cathedral School.

The Gawura students have had an extremely busy year. One of the highlights was receiving a visit from Her Excellency Professor Dame Marie Bashir in her last year as Governor of NSW, after a remarkable 12 year tenure. Dame Marie was treated to a special NAIDOC rehearsal by the students followed by a question/answer session. One of the students asked Her Excellency where she lived to which she replied, “Why don’t you all visit me and see where I live for yourselves? We can have some afternoon tea together”. The ecstatic children immediately took Her Excellency up on her offer and visited Government House in July 2014.
