Update: Vanuatu Cyclone Emergency Appeal

ABM has just received a report from the Anglican Church of Melanesia Vanuatu’s (ACOMV) Deputy General Secretary, Mr Joses Togase, with an update on the emergency relief response. 

“The Anglican Church of Melanesia (ACOM) have been working collaboratively with the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) since day one of the Tropical Cyclone Donna.

“Our engagement includes dissemination of Tropical Cyclone Alerts and Warnings to the two Dioceses of the Anglican Church in Vanuatu, receiving situation updates from affected communities as well as providing SITREPs to the National Emergency Operation Center for official publication to the NDMO website.

“At 5.00 pm today 15th May, 2017, the Anglican Mission ship, Southern Cross is scheduled to leave Port Vila to Santo with relief supplies and donations from ACOM, the Anglican parishioners in Port Vila, the Vanuatu Council of Churches and Hygiene Kits from the WASH cluster.”

The donations include 700kgs precooked Cassava Chips, 700kgs precooked chicken, 80 cartons of distilled water, and 12 Water Purification Units. These will be stored at the main distribution site on Loh Island in Torres until they are needed.

According to the report, the Southern Cross will depart from Santo today, Tuesday 16 May, with 3 ACOMV staff members to supervise the delivery of the relief supplies upon arrival in Torres. They are Fr Meckenzie Vagaha, Leviah Apunga and Fisher Young Dinh, the ACOMV Disaster Risk Management Coordinator.

ABM emergency funding has gone towards the purchase of food supplies including pre-cooked food. ACOMV extends their thanks to ABM as well as others who have given generously towards this emergency response, including the ACOM Provincial Headquarters in Honiara, the Solomon Islands.
