Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)

Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)

The eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are part of the Millennium Declaration of the United Nations which was signed in 2000 by all of the members of the United Nations. The MDGs have galvanized unprecedented efforts to meet the needs of the world’s poorest by governments, non-government organisations, multi-lateral institutions, religious organisations, and individuals.

ABM is working together with many other government and non-government organisations to meet these goals by the target date of 2015.

WHAT ARE THE MDGS?

Goal 1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
Goal 2. Achieve universal primary education
Goal 3. Promote gender equality and empower women
Goal 4. Reduce child mortality
Goal 5. Improve maternal health
Goal 6. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
Goal 7. Ensure environmental sustainability
Goal 8. Develop a global partnership for development

ABM is working with our Partners to contribute to the achievement of the MDGs, through programs in water security, literacy and education, primary health care, sustainable agricultural development, and HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment.

In addition, we are exploring ways of reducing our own environmental footprint, and developing global partnerships which assist in the alleviation of poverty.

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) refer to an agreement of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development held in Rio de Janeiro in June 2012 (Rio+20), to develop a set of future international development goals.

At Rio+20, countries agreed to establish an intergovernmental process to develop a set of “action-oriented, concise and easy to communicate” sustainable development goals which will build upon the Millennium Development Goals and converge with the post 2015 development agenda.
