World Water Day 2018

March 2018

World Water day 2018

Today, there are over 663 million people living without a safe water supply close to home, spending countless hours queuing or trekking to distant sources, and coping with the health impacts of using contaminated water.

Environmental damage, together with climate change, is driving the water-related crises we see around the world. Floods, drought and water pollution are all made worse by degraded vegetation, soil, rivers and lakes.

This year, the UN World Water Day theme seeks to promote nature-based solutions to these problems, such as planting new forests, reconnecting rivers to floodplains, and restoring wetlands to rebalance the water cycle and improve human health and livelihoods.*

Sustainable Development Goal 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation

World Water Day is about taking action. Although much has been accomplished through the Millennium Development Goals, which saw 1.9 billion gain access to piped drinking water, there is much more to be done. The Sustainable Development Goals include a target to ensure everyone has access to safe water by 2030, making water a key issue in the fight to eradicate extreme poverty. On this World Water Day 2018, please consider ways in which you might assist others to access this basic human right of clean water and a healthy future.

“Do what you can, do it with others, and do it with passion.” – Guy Ryder, Chair of UN-Water, on the power of individuals to change the world.
